5 Reasons You're Not Achieving Your Goals & What You Can Do About it NOW!!

By Laura Allahverdi

Got goals?

Banging your head against the wall wondering why you are just not reaching them?
If you keep doing the same things and getting the same results, it’s time to change it up.

Here are 5 reasons you might not be where you want to be, and what you can do differently to make it happen.

1.    It’s not even really your goal

What am I talking about? You know when you just feel like you ‘should’ do something? Or you just think it’s important to do something? Or other people tell you the best thing for you to do?

You may just not be achieving your goal because it’s not really what YOU truly want for yourself.

What to do about it:
Get clear on your “why.”
It’s just as important to know why you want to achieve something, as it is to know what you are trying to achieve. Check in with yourself and ask … WHY do I want to achieve this goal? What is the drive behind this? Is it to impress someone else? Please someone else? Be honest here.

When you find your “why,” if it’s not a great one, then adjust your goal accordingly.
If your “why” IS something really important to you, then let that drive you.

2.    You’re thinking the outcome is too far in the future

Got 50 lbs to lose? Trying to build an empire? Saving for retirement? Going back to school to become something else? These are BIG goals and awesome ones too! When you think about the rewards of these goals, it may seem like they are millions of miles away. Feel like you need to put years into your business or job before you get what you want from it? Feel like that weight will take years to lose? Feel like retirement is a lifetime away? Well then, what’s the point in working on it now? It may feel so easy to give up when the finish line is nowhere in sight.

What to do about it:
Break down your big goal into teeny, tiny, totally achievable goals and celebrate the heck out of all the wins!
Did you lose 2 lbs? Awesome. Do a little dance and enjoy that win!
Did you start putting away a few bucks a month toward retirement? Awesome. Do something fun to celebrate.
It’s important to bring the rewards closer to where you are now so you can use those wins as momentum to keep going.

And just to let you in on a little secret … it’s all about the journey anyway. Once you achieve the goal, it’s all over. You will need a newer, bigger, goal to work on J

3. You’re too desperate for the result

Trying to find ‘the one’ and get married because you are just so lonely? Want to have a baby soon because you are getting older and time is ticking? Need to make sales at your job or business because you can’t pay your bills?

When you feel so desperate for things to work out it can work against you. When you come from a place of scarcity or lack and start to try to force things to happen, it can be much harder to get what you want.

What to do about it:
It may sound counterintuitive but you’ve got to release the need to control the outcome. You’ve got to let go and allow things to happen. Shift your focus from the results to the action steps. So for instance if you want to get married, focus on dating and allow things to happen. Release the ‘need’ to make a marriage, or make sale in your business and just focus on the tasks to get there. It will happen.

4.    You don’t really want it or you’re out of alignment

You’ve got to want it and you’ve got to want it bad. If you want it because you think it will get you to a place where then something else can happen to then get you where you want to be … you’re not in alignment. You’re taking the long way around. I’ve run into so many people that tell me that looked for a job for months and never get one. When I ask why they want the job, it’s always because they think they need it to get the money to then do something else. That ‘something else’ is the REAL thing they want.

What to do about it:
P.Diddy says it best, “Don’t chase the paper, chase the dream.” Make sure you are going after the right thing. The thing you really want. Check if your goal is really in alignment with your big vision. If not, adjust your goals to meet your end wants and desires. When you get in alignment, you get where you want to go faster and easier.

5.   You’ve got the wrong strategy

On one of my favorite episodes of Shark Tank, one of the contestants was so adamant about continuing on with her business even after every shark told her it was a horrible idea and she was going nowhere fast. She defended her efforts by telling Lori Greiner that she saw her recent social media post saying that one should never give up.

Here’s the thing. The sharks didn’t think she should give up on her dreams of entrepreneurship or her big vision for her business. She needed to give up on her strategy and come to terms with the fact that it just wasn’t working. So maybe you’re just going about it all wrong.

What to do about it:
If you keep looking east trying to see a sunset … you just never will. You’ve got to be able to know when you’ve exhausted a strategy. No need to give up on your vision or your goals. Sometimes you just need a new approach. Even when you have a good approach, sometimes it goes stale and you just need to change it up. Ask yourself, how else can you I where I want to go?

Now over to you...

Tell me in the comments:
What’s your goal?
Are you committing one of these goal-killing crimes?
What will you do instead?
